Common Eiders, Kennebunk, Maine

These two images of a female Common Eider were taken back on July 20 on a two day trip to Kennebunk, Maine. The weather wasn't the best for photography and I only had a small group of Common Eiders on the first day that I was able to photograph well. This was my third year in a row that I have gone to this same place and there's usually a group of these birds that hang out on a stretch of rocky shoreline next to the beach. They were pretty approachable and I was able to get close a few times. I wouldn't consider the images I got on this trip prize winners but they're good to add to my stock files for this cool species.

  1. Awesome shots Josh! This is a neat looking species. I will be traveling to Maine in 5 weeks for a week of shooting in Acadia NP. Do you know what species I can expect to see and where to photograph them? Thanks for any info!

  2. I've only been there once and it was in July so I don't know exactly what you will see. You will probably see some of these though for sure, along with a deer or two.
