Ring-billed Gulls

I've been itching lately to get out and take some new photographs, so stopped at a lake in the city of Worcester earlier today before I had to get to class. This particular lake is a good place for waterfowl and gulls, although today there was only the common species such as Mallard and these Ring-billed Gulls. It was nice to just give my camera a workout since it hasn't had much action the past few weeks. I usually tend to take these common species for granted, but during slow times they can be just what I need to get my photography "fix". I got quite a few decent keepers of the ducks, and these two images of gulls in flight which I decided to share.

This first image was originally a horizontal, and I cropped it to a vertical with an addition of canvas on the top and bottom.

I've always had an strong interest in up close flight images like the one below...This young individual passed by close and I decided to crop it a bit to make the composition stronger. I was really surprised by the focusing accuracy of the Canon 40D. It was doing a great job tracking the birds in flight even with surprisingly busy backgrounds. I was using the center auto focus point for the birds in flight as I do about 90% of the time.

  1. These look great Josh! I like the details and the high key look. I never was a fan of the tight flight images until recently, if done right they can be awesome and you have done it right here. My portfolio boasts almost zero flight shots, due 80% to my 100-400's poor AF and 20% to my lack of skill... Glad you were able to get out, I know all too well what it's like when you haven't been out in a while!
